EU’s important role in Mediterranean reserves

Cyprus Minister of Energy Yiorgos Lakkotrypis underlined on Wednesday the importance of the energy reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In an intervention at the Informal EU Council of Energy Ministers, that took place in Bratislava, Lakkotrypis said that the energy reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean can play an important role for strengthening the EU`s energy security. He also noted the need to develop infrastructure to link the member states towards a united European energy market.
During the discussion on liquified natural gas, Lakkotrypis said that “our strategy includes the development of a new natural gas corridor, in the Eastern Mediterranean, that would supply the EU”. To this end, he pointed out, Cyprus has proceeded to the third licensing round in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
In the framework of the Council, the Cypriot Minister of Energy held a meeting with Amos Hochstein, Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs of the US State Department. The meeting focused on the latest developments in the energy sector in Cyprus and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean, an official press release says.
